POSITION TITLE: Tool Engineer
DATE: 01-20-2012
REPORTS TO: Tool Engineer Manager
POSITION PURPOSE/MISSION:
Accountable for effective design, sourcing and implementation of tooling, gages, fixtures and prototype activities that conforms with Res’ quality system standards. This position directly supports quoting activities for customers and prospects and may include part design assistance for the customer/prospect as well as Design for Manufacturability suggestions.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Estimate costs during quoting process for new tool construction, tool modifications and manufacturing costs associated with the stamping process.
- Develop layouts and concepts for new tool construction.
- Manage the tool construction project including the sourcing of new tools.
- Assist in/perform new tool design reviews.
- Meet with customer quality and engineering personnel to determine critical part features and review manufacturability of design.
- Participate in feasibility meetings as part of the quoting process for new business.
- Problem solving and corrective action related to tooling quality issues.
- Die design and detailing for tool improvements.
- Update existing tool drawing as required.
- Participate in a cross functional product launch team within the framework of APQP.
- Tool and fixture design for secondary operations such as welding, assembly etc.
- Other duties may be assigned.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
- No direct supervisory duties
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
- Internal – Regularly interact with Materials, Quality, Engineering, Sales, Receiving and Manufacturing.
- External – Regularly interact with all levels of suppliers and customers.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum Technical Qualifications:
- Technical degree in Stamping Die Design or Engineering.
- Five years experience in similar position.
- Experience with stamping tooling design and construction.
- Previous work experience in an organization that supplied large OEM’s.
- Experience with certified quality management systems (i.e. TS16949, ISO).
Preferred Technical Qualifications:
- Experience with APQP/New product launch in an OEM supply chain.
- Demonstrated understanding of quality tools such as FMEA, root cause analysis, statistical analysis/six sigma techniques, etc.
- Project management experience.
- Technical knowledge of manufacturing processes.
- Die making experience.
- High level of competency in metallurgy and/or material science.
